President Donald Trump said Friday he approved $184 million in additional FEMA hurricane relief for Florida’s Panhandle a day earlier at the request of two Republicans on the state’s ballot.

“They call up. They bug me all the time. They’re always looking for money,” Trump said, describing requests from Rep. Byron Donalds and Sen. Ashley Moody. “So they call me twice. I said, ‘Listen, just tell them I’m not in.’”“I don’t know what it is with the Panhandle. I get 98 percent of the vote,” Trump said. “It’s like the most incredible thing.”

He added: “What happened? It rained a little bit. There was a little drizzle. And I gave it to them.”The money is meant to help individuals affected by Hurricane Isaias, which hit Northwest Florida Oct. 6-12. The funding covers grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-interest loans for uninsured property losses and other recovery programs. The Category 2 storm killed at least four people and left hundreds of thousands without power.

Donalds, the Republican nominee for governor, told the crowd before Trump took the stage that he had asked the president for the money by phone Thursday.

“We need the sign-off for individual assistance from FEMA for the people in the Panhandle,” Donalds said he told Trump. Trump told him it was done, Donalds said. “And it was signed off two hours later for the people in the Panhandle.”Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis requested a major disaster declaration Oct. 15, seeking public assistance for 15 counties and individual assistance for eight. Federal Emergency Management Agency records show the public assistance request was approved Oct. 27. Trump amended the declaration two days later to include individual assistance for the eight counties.

Approved disaster relief timelines have varied under Trump. FEMA records list 13 declaration requests in process as of this week. Four of them filed before Florida’s are still pending — including August requests from Indiana and Nebraska and September requests from Kansas and Washington. Several others are appeals of earlier denials. FEMA and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

While he didn’t tie Florida’s disaster relief to the outcome of Tuesday’s elections, Trump has said in campaign stops across the country that Republican losses in the state where he was stumping could cost them federal money.

At a rally in Park City, Kansas, earlier this month, he said if Democratic nominee Adam Hamilton won the Senate seat, he would withhold a fuel waiver.

“I also gave Kansas a waiver to sell E15 all year round. And with Roger Marshall in the Senate, we will make year-round E15 permanent,” Trump said. “But if Adam Hamilton is in, I’m not doing it.”Trump tied Camp Lejeune water contamination settlements to Republican control of Congress during a campaign event at Pitt-Greenville Airport in North Carolina.

“If we win the House and the Senate, I am directing the Department of Justice to settle all remaining legitimate claims as soon as possible,” he said, adding later: “If we don’t win, there’s no money. If we do win, you’re getting it.”

In September, at a rally in Gastonia, North Carolina, Trump said the state was awaiting additional Hurricane Helene funding beyond the $2 billion already spent. “Now if Michael loses, I’m not sending it, OK?” he said, referring to Republican Senate nominee Michael Whatley, before adding: “No, I’m only kidding. You’re getting it.”Earlier in the week, it looked like Friday’s Daytona stop might have been Trump’s last in-person rally of the election following the cancellation of weekend rallies in Kansas and Iowa.

But less than a day after they were canceled in favor of closing-stretch tele-rallies, the Kansas and Iowa events were rescheduled for Sunday.
