BANGKOK -- Thailand's reformist movement tried too hard to show it was ready to govern and lost touch with voters, said Pita Limjaroenrat, who led the movement in a general election three years ago but failed to form a government.

Pita's Move Forward Party won the most seats in the 2023 election, but his bid to become prime minister was blocked by conservatives in a parliamentary vote. In 2024, Thailand's Constitutional Court dissolved the party over its campaign to amend the royal defamation law and banned its executives, including Pita, from politics for 10 years. Move Forward's successor, the People's Party, finished second in this year's election, losing to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's conservative Bhumjaithai Party.

"The [Move Forward Party] tried too hard to professionalize itself and to show that we're ready to govern," Pita told Nikkei Asia in an interview in Kuala Lumpur in late September. Move Forward's proposed governing team of technocrats, according to Pita, had drifted from the concerns of rural communities. "We technocratized ourselves rather than fighting for the 99%," he said.

Pita urged reformists in his country to align their policies more closely to voters' daily concerns. As for getting out the party's message, he said door-to-door campaigning, visits to workplaces and community institutions, broadcast appearances and social media all need to be used. He added that resources should be prioritized based on constituency data.

"TikTok is never enough," he said, referring to the social media platform politicians often use for voter outreach. He also called on opposition politicians to respond actively to emergencies such as floods, even without government resources. "If the government doesn't move, you have to move." During the interview, he criticized the current government's emphasis on stimulating consumption saying scarce fiscal resources should be used for targeted objectives such as debt restructuring for households and small and midsize enterprises (SMEs).

"The repair of balance sheets, specifically debt rehabilitation for households and SMEs ... would be something that I would tackle first," he said. Temporary energy support should also be targeted at transportation, agriculture and other productive sectors, he said.

Thailand should "stay open" to trade and foreign investment, he said, but "you have to make sure that we don't get taken advantage of." He pointed to Chinese e-commerce platforms that "don't have to pay any tax" on low-value imports, while Thai SMEs pay excise tax and value-added tax. He said Indonesia, which has moved to protect its small businesses, might provide a model.

The lesson for reformers across the region, he said, is that change needs an electoral mandate, the capacity to implement policy and a coalition that can sustain it. He also warned against assuming younger voters would automatically back progressive parties. Their support must be earned, he said.

Pita, now 46, left open the possibility of a return to frontline politics when his ban expires in 2034, while insisting the movement should not be built around his comeback. Citing Brazil's Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim who returned to power after long spells in the wilderness, he said political careers are rarely linear.

"I'm not saying that a movement should wait for a person," he said. "But if the people still want me and I'm still rigorous, capable and relevant when I turn 54, and if there's still room for me, I'm willing to wait and return."
