TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will increase its gas turbine manufacturing and maintenance capabilities in the U.S., with plans to invest $490 million for adding capacity to its factory in Georgia, Nikkei has learned.
The move comes as U.S. electricity demand surges due to the construction of data centers to power artificial intelligence.
The Japanese company will expand its Savannah Machinery Works, a plant operated by group member Mitsubishi Power Americas. The Georgia site, completed in 2010, is Mitsubishi Heavy's first overseas gas turbine production base. It primarily manufactures and maintains gas turbines and other equipment for utilities in North America.
The project will nearly double the manufacturing space there. The facility also will introduce processing equipment for gas turbine components and the latest manufacturing technologies. The company plans to hire more than 220 engineers for manufacturing, quality control, maintenance and other roles.
Mitsubishi Heavy targets doubling its production capacity for large gas turbines by fiscal 2030 compared with fiscal 2024. It looks to invest over 100 billion yen ($635 million) in its Japanese and U.S. manufacturing and service bases to enhance the company's supply capacity for both turbines and maintenance parts.
Gas turbines, once installed, sometimes can be used for decades. The company anticipates that ongoing after-sales services, such as maintenance contracts and parts replacement, for its main models will cover more than 300 units worldwide by 2030.
The International Energy Agency reports that global electricity demand from data centers is expected to more than double by 2030 compared with 2024. In the U.S. in particular, the construction of data centers supporting AI development and cloud services is booming, making securing a stable power supply a major challenge.
Gas-fired power generation produces lower carbon dioxide emissions and has a smaller environmental impact than power generation using oil or coal. Because it can generate electricity more reliably than renewable energy sources, demand for gas-fired plants is increasing to serve data centers that consume large amounts of electricity.
