HSBC said its RedCoin retail stablecoin has attracted 50,000 users since its official launch just over a week ago, as the city’s largest lender remains committed to exploring new technologies in the city.

The figures were revealed by HSBC group CEO Georges Elhedery during a panel discussion on the first day of Hong Kong FinTech Week which kicked off on Monday.

Elhedery also attributed the quick ramp-up to the “comfortable” regulatory environment that the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) had provided.

“Of course, our target is multimillion users,” said the CEO of the city’s largest lender. “But it just shows one can scale some of these features when the technology is sound and safe, and when the regulatory environment is also there and safe.”HSBC’s Hong Kong dollar-backed RedCoin, one of only two licensed stablecoins in the city, debuted in October for more than 3.3 million users of its PayMe app.

RedCoin would be available later to all HSBC and Hang Seng Bank clients, Elhedery said on Monday, without offering a detailed timetable.

Hong Kong’s stablecoin ordinance took effect on August 1 last year. The other licensee, Anchorpoint, a joint venture formed by Standard Chartered, Animoca Brands and HKT, rolled out the first phase of its stablecoin, HKDAP coin, via beta access in August, eyeing retail use “as early as end-2026”.

On the first day of Hong Kong FinTech Week, HSBC also showcased everyday payments with RedCoin. The bank also announced plans to offer the stablecoin through its HSBC HK Mobile Banking app and to let customers to tokenised asset products, including money-market funds.

“Merchant payments and wallet top-ups are already live, and we are encouraged by early customer usage,” Maggie Ng, CEO of HSBC Hong Kong, said in a statement on Monday. “This is how digital currency becomes part of daily life in Hong Kong.”Meanwhile, HSBC plans to set up a global AI & Emerging Technology Institute in the city to develop new and innovative technologies together with selected academic and technology partners.

The institute will be based in the city’s Northern Metropolis and is expected to start operations in early 2027.

The move further underlined HSBC’s long-term commitment to Hong Kong and its role as a centre for innovation, research and technology, the bank said in a separate statement on Monday.

HSBC also disclosed in mid-October a plan to double its artificial intelligence specialists in Hong Kong to 300, after reports that its decision to set up an AI centre in Singapore raised concerns at the HKMA.

HSBC expects the new institute will help improve its banking services and operations for customers and contribute to the formation of the bank’s engineering and technology strategies.

One immediate focus would be how to ensure defensive preparedness against new attempts at fraud in the agentic AI world.

HSBC would explore AI opportunities “thoughtfully and strategically”, turning the most valuable innovations into better outcomes for its customers, said David Liao Yi-chien, co-CEO for Asia and the Middle East at the lender.
