India‘s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman urged the Tata Group to resolve its internal leadership dispute amicably, saying the conglomerate’s standing as a global brand and its contribution to the Indian economy make an early settlement important.
Speaking at an event in Mumbai on Monday, Sitharaman said the matter required commercial acumen and cordiality between the parties, and should not be allowed to spill into the public domain.
“I think these are very delicate matters,” she said. “It is a very critical component to Indian economy, and therefore it has to be amicably settled among themselves.”Her remarks come as the $185-billion conglomerate grapples with an internal power struggle between Tata Sons and its largest shareholder, Tata Trusts. The dispute centers on the reappointment of Natarajan Chandrasekaran as chairman of Tata Sons, alongside broader questions over corporate governance and whether the holding company should list on the stock market.
“So they talk it out, make sure it comes back quickly to some normalcy,” Sitharaman said. “You cannot be spinning out like this in public.”The feud has also drawn political attention, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accusing the government of allowing the group to be “criminally destroyed.”Sitharaman had hit back at Gandhi, accusing him of politicizing a commercial and legal dispute.
