India needs equity capital to support growth, the country's federal finance minister said on Monday, as foreign investors seek tax relief after selling a record $31 billion in Indian stocks this year.
To sustain growth of more than 7%, India needs capital, especially equity, Nirmala Sitharaman said at an event organised by the Financial Express newspaper in Mumbai.
"We also have this voice that equity also needs the kind of support given to the debt market, I recognise this voice," Sitharaman said.
Earlier this year, India removed a long term capital gains tax for foreign debt investors. The country's market regulator is recommending similar relief for equity investors, Reuters reported earlier on Monday.
The taxation structure was the same in 2023, when inflows were at a record high, Sitharaman said.
"Circumstances have changed, challenges have grown...FPI outflows have happened, voices of concern are louder," she said, adding that all this will be considered. Tax changes are typically announced during the annual federal budget in February.
