When face to face with Ms Benichou, the latter asked another person nearby whether the woman’s outfit would be acceptable in Iran“Am I wrong?” she asks. “If she walked around in Iran like this, what would happen to her?”The woman then shoves Ms Benichou to the ground. A bystander intervenes, pulling her away, before a police officer restrains her and orders her not to resist.

“Political violence has NO place in the United States of America,” she wrote on X. “I am incredibly grateful to the law enforcement officers who acted immediately to protect me. I am now in a safe location receiving care, and I am going to be OK.”In comments to The Telegraph, Ms Benichou said that she “had absolutely no prior interaction with this woman” and that Sunday was the first time she had ever seen her. “I don’t attend the University of Michigan and I had never encountered her before,” she added. She said that she intended to join the debate table, but the situation escalated before she could participate.

Speaking of the woman, she told the Telegraph: “She had every right to disagree with us, criticise our views, or challenge our arguments. What she did not have the right to do was physically attack me.”The University of Michigan police department said officers had been responding to an unpermitted event shortly before 5pm when they witnessed a student assaulting a woman who was not affiliated with the university. Pro-Trump influencer Liz Benichou says political violence ‘has no place’ in America“As the group was packing up to leave, officers witnessed a University of Michigan student assault a woman not affiliated with the university,” the department told the Mail.

Speaking to Fox News after the incident, Ms Benichou, who describes herself as a “proud Jewish woman” and displays an Israeli flag on her social media accounts, said she supported open debate, comparing her approach to that of Charlie Kirk, the late conservative activist, who was known for holding public debates on university campuses.

“She didn’t seem to want to listen, she wanted to start shouting,” Ms Benichou said of the student. “She just lunged.”Liberty Under Fire is a conservative youth organisation led by Taylor Sharp, its founder and chief executive. It hosts public debates and political events on US university campuses, launching its tour in May 2026. The organisation did not have a permit to hold the event on campus, according to university police.

Ms Benichou’s social media profile describes her as a commentator on “culture, politics, and life”. Her X profile picture shows her wearing a red hat bearing the slogan “Make America Hot Again”, a play on the Maga slogan. The University of Michigan, university police and Ms Benichou were approached for comment.
