More than 1,000 customers lost power Monday in Washington, DC's Foggy Bottom neighborhood following an incident at an electrical substation, utility company Pepco said.

Pepco, which supplies electricity to the US capital and surrounding areas, said in a statement to broadcaster 7News that approximately 1,100 customers were affected by an incident at its I Street Substation.

"Pepco crews are on site assessing conditions and are working safely and as quickly as possible to restore power," the company said. "At this time, the cause of the event remains under investigation," it added.

The utility said it had no estimated time for restoring electricity because "the situation is still developing."

It also urged "residents and visitors to stay clear of work areas." The DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department said on US social media platform X that crews responded to reports of smoke coming from multiple manholes in the 1800 block of H Street NW.

The department said Pepco personnel were at the scene to assist with a power surge and outages in the area.
