Labs president Max Jaderberg thinks that artificial intelligence will be used to develop all medicines in the future — the only question is how quickly that future will arrive.

Speaking at the Bloomberg Tech conference in London on Monday, Jaderberg said the company’s efforts to use AI for faster and more efficient drug discovery are still in preclinical trials. Isomorphic is in its “first innings” as a company, he said.

In January, Isomorphic’s Chief Executive Officer Demis Hassabis had said it expected to move into its first clinical trials by the end of 2026.

Spun out of Alphabet Inc.’s Google DeepMind, Isomorphic is creating AI models for its own drug development efforts, as well as to power programs for biopharma companies including Eli Lilly & Co. and Novartis AG.

“This will happen. All drugs in the future will be AI-designed. There’s no question in my mind. I just don’t want that to take 20 years or 50 years to happen passively,” Jaderberg said.

The startup, which has raised about $2.7 billion to date from backers including Alphabet and Thrive Capital, has recently been in talks for a new funding round that could value it at $40 billion or more, Bloomberg reported last month. Isomorphic didn’t disclose its valuation when it last announced fresh funding in May.

The company was founded in 2021 with Hassabis, then Google DeepMind’s CEO, at the helm with plans to build on the breakthrough protein-folding model AlphaFold. In August, Hassabis moved into new roles as DeepMind’s Chair as well as Alphabet’s Chief Scientist, but he remains Isomorphic’s CEO.

Jaderberg said that previous drug developments were largely trial-and-error and resulted in “low-hanging fruit.”“I believe that we’re not actually very good as a species at creating medicines. It’s a miracle that we have amazing medications already,” he said.

Numerous AI companies are exploring life science efforts, including Anthropic PBC, which earlier this year bought biotech startup Coefficient Bio and released Claude Science in beta for AI-powered scientific research. Others, like OpenAI-backed Chai Discovery, are raising venture capital to compete with Isomorphic directly on AI drug discovery.
