(NEXSTAR) – After months of campaigning, Election Day has finally arrived.
If you didn't take advantage of early voting options, it's now time to head to your polling place and cast your ballot.
You may, though, find yourself being asked to vote in a race you haven't been following or on a ballot measure you don't have a desire to weigh in on. If that's the case, you do not have to vote for a candidate or option in either section. You can instead leave it blank and vote in other sections.
This would be considered an "undervote," meaning you voted in fewer races, appointments, or amendment questions than you were permitted to vote in.
Whether you vote in one race or all but one contest on your ballot, it will be counted.
Alabama election officials tell voters they are "not required to vote in all races on the ballot," explaining, "participation is your choice."
Many other states, including Colorado, Iowa, and Georgia, offer similar guidance.
If you would rather write in a candidate than vote for one already on the ballot, it may or may not be allowed. Maryland, for example, warns that write-ins are accepted in a general election but not a primary election. Louisiana does not allow write-ins.
If you aren't sure what you will be voting for on Election Day, you can find sample ballots on USA.gov, though they will not include information about the candidates.
