Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) stopped short of committing to support Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) as the top House Republican after Tuesday’s midterm elections, suggesting his future in leadership could depend on the party’s performance at the polls.
In an interview on Monday with NewsNation’s “The Hill,” Boebert weighed in on whether she wanted Johnson to remain the party’s leader regardless of whether the GOP retained control of the House. “Look, if the leader of our party brings home victories, then he has every right to be there and lead once again,” Boebert told NewsNation’s Blake Burman. “You don’t fire your coach who takes you to the Super Bowl and wins.”
“Mike Johnson and I talk on a regular basis, and we’ll see what things look like after the midterms,” she continued.
Republicans are facing difficult political terrain heading into Election Day, with control of the House hanging in the balance and Johnson’s future as speaker potentially riding on the outcome. Johnson has spent the election cycle working to defend the GOP’s narrow House majority, which has repeatedly complicated Republicans’ efforts to advance President Trump’s legislative agenda. The top House Republican has made it clear that he has no intentions of giving up his leadership role regardless of the election’s outcome, despite most House speakers in recent years stepping down after losing the gavel.
Boebert, a staunch Trump ally who has occasionally clashed with Republican leadership, acknowledged that Democrats have an advantage heading into Tuesday’s elections but expressed confidence in her own reelection prospects in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District. “Democrats are definitely motivated,” she said, pointing to Democratic spending and organizing efforts in Colorado.
“I do feel comfortable in my seat.”The nonpartisan election handicapper Cook Political Report shifted her race from “solid red” to “likely red” in the final weeks of the race in what would ordinally be a noncompetitive pickup for Republicans. Trump carried the district in 2024 by 18 percentage points, while Boebert secured more than 53 percent of the vote that same year.
