Pakistan on Tuesday "successfully" tested its first indigenously developed "Fa'az" air-to-air missile, the country's military said.
Equipped with an advanced terminal guidance system, the Fa'az missile is designed to track and engage hostile aerial targets at extended ranges, maximizing defensive and offensive air capabilities, a statement from the Pakistani army's media wing said.
Highlighting the test as a major step toward defense self-reliance and technological innovation for the country's aerospace sector, the statement said the missile will provide the Pakistan Air Force with greater operational flexibility, stronger air combat capabilities and decreased reliance on foreign weapons platforms.
President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and army chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir congratulated the nation and the teams involved in the "milestone." The development follows Pakistan's test launch of an extended-range version of the Fatah-2 hypersonic ballistic missile in October.
