Inc. set aside more money to resolve a years long probe by the Department of Justice into its anti-money laundering program.
In October, the company and the Justice Department reached an agreement in principle where the regulator will “defer, for a period of three years, a charge that the company failed to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program in violation of the Bank Secrecy Act,” according to a regulatory filing Tuesday.
The deferred-prosecution agreement, which requires court approval, is expected to have a gross monetary component of about $964 million and a net payment of about $764 million, according to the filing. The company had already set aside $526 million at the end of June, and bumped that up to $764 million at the end of September.
US watchdogs have been cracking down on anti-money laundering lapses through a slate of fines in recent weeks. In October, federal regulators slapped Bank of America Corp. with $1.21 billion in penalties for anti-money laundering and sanction violations, the bank’s biggest regulatory fine in the past decade.
Regulators also previously fined American Express Co. $350 million for failing to catch and report money laundering in its system.
