Geopolitical risk has become crucial to investment decision-making, according to speakers at Hong Kong’s flagship investment summit on Wednesday, who highlighted the increasing reality that global tensions are spilling over to markets.

During a panel at the 2026 Global Financial Leaders’ Investment Summit, Lazard Asset Management Chief Executive Officer Chris Hogbin and Schroders Plc CEO Richard Oldfield made clear that investors can no longer afford to assess opportunities through financial metrics alone.

“I would argue that over the last few years, we’ve moved to a world where it looks pretty different,” said Hogbin. “It’s multipolar competition. It’s deals. It’s conflict, whether that’s trade wars, whether that’s military wars, it’s rearmament, right?”“If we’re in a really different place, we probably need to manage money and think about asset allocations differently,” he added.

Hogbin said his firm was “investing incredibly heavily” in building geopolitical capabilities, having assembled a team of former military professionals, ex-politicians and political analysts to help Lazard and its clients map out how geopolitical flareups will impact asset prices.

Although artificial intelligence has dominated discussion among bankers and investors at the Hong Kong event over the past few days, multiple panelists have pointed to higher fuel prices as another headache. Oil futures have jumped almost 70% this year as the Iran conflict has hit supply, adding to worries about global inflation.

Schroders’ Oldfield highlighted the risk of inflation fueling a vicious cycle, as sovereigns and consumers up their spending.

“The cost of debt goes up, and you get this cycle that means equity and fixed income markets are now perfectly correlated,” he said. “So I think that’s the risk that is different as we look forward into 2027.”The panelists spoke as investors digested the US midterm elections. The growing prospect of a Democratic sweep of Congress rippled across global markets, sending US stock-index futures and the dollar lower while boosting Treasuries as early returns came in.
