HO CHI MINH CITY -- Petrovietnam President and CEO Le Manh Cuong called wind and nuclear power the company's future after the Middle East war briefly left it "with no single drop" of fossil fuel.

The state-owned oil and gas giant has decades of offshore drilling experience that it will parlay into offshore wind, a somewhat "similar" endeavor, he said late on Tuesday. "The wind will be there forever," Cuong said during the Fortune Southeast Asia 500 Summit in Ho Chi Minh City.

He added that Petrovietnam will remain in the fossil fuel business, but in the coming 15 to 20 years "our journey will be greener and more affordable." When asked about the scale of Petrovietnam's push into alternative energy, he did not give a figure but said Vietnam's 600 gigawatts of offshore wind potential is the highest in Southeast Asia. The corporation has entered the wind power equipment market, recently manufacturing four substations for an offshore farm and delivering them to a client in Poland.

Idemitsu is among the investors helping Vietnam develop new oil and gas fields.
