Sen. Amy Klobuchar has won the Minnesota governor’s race, NBC News projects, a victory that will make her the first woman to lead the Midwestern state. Klobuchar, 66, defeated Republican Lisa Demuth, the state House speaker, extending the Democratic Party’s grip on the governor’s mansion. Minnesota has not elected a Republican governor since 2006. Although the national political environment favored Democrats this year, the party’s brand in the state has been tarnished in recent years.

She comfortably won re-election in 2012, 2018 and 2024. Klobuchar also unsuccessfully sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.
