Australian government claims Reddit could sidestep social media age restrictions with a kid-friendly version CANBERRA — Digital platforms like Reddit could avoid social media account restrictions on under 16s, by offering a separate version for children without harmful features, the Australian government argued in the High Court.

Stephen Lloyd, counsel for the Commonwealth, argued on the second day of Reddit’s High Court case against the restrictions, that nothing prevents the plaintiff from offering a Reddit Kids platform. Recommender systems that don’t use account information to deliver an algorithmic feed would not be covered by Australia’s world-leading under-16 account ban, Lloyd said.

The argument was disputed by Reddit, whose counsel Perry Herzfeld whispered “that’s wrong” to Lloyd, an interjection Lloyd picked up and addressed in his oral submissions on Wednesday. Lloyd refined that the “entire platform or service” would have to be free from the harmful features to escape the ban — effectively that any Reddit Kids-style service would need to operate as a parallel service to the main platform.
