Democrat Troy Jackson, a progressive logger, has defeated Republican Sen. Susan Collins in Maine’s Senate race, according to the Associated Press. His victory ends Collins’ 30-year run in the Senate.

Logger and longtime politician: A fifth-generation Mainer, Jackson was born in Fort Kent along the Canadian border. Like his father, Jackson worked as a logger. He first got involved in politics in 1998, when he led a blockade along the U.S.-Canadian border to protest landowners’ hiring of lower-wage Canadian contract workers instead of Americans.

He originally entered politics as a Republican, but has since changed his positions on issues including abortion rights and same-sex marriage.
