It's also the first major firm to collapse in the AI era, presenting new options for its lawyers and for new AI-powered law firms looking for legal talent. Four "AI-native" firms told Reuters they have been actively working to recruit Weil lawyers in the week since the firm's leadership recommended dissolution.

At least three are also bidding to acquire non-attorney assets of the once-leading Wall Street firm. Mathias Strasser, founder and CEO of London-founded AI law firm and legal technology platform Scissero, said he is pursuing both.

Dozens of partners have since been recruited or are in talks to join other large law firms. The planned dissolution comes as a growing number of AI-native law firms over the past two years have hired lawyers from traditional firms as they grow their businesses.
