Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen on Monday summoned Israel's ambassador over a decision to revoke the diplomatic status of several employees of the Netherlands' mission in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

Berendsen announced the move during a joint news conference with his visiting German counterpart Johann Wadephul in The Hague, public broadcaster NOS reported. The affected Dutch personnel have been ordered to leave Israel within seven days, according to the report.

Israel's decision came after the Netherlands introduced measures against Israel, including a ban on imports of goods originating from illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank and Golan Heights.

Berendsen described Israel's move as "unnecessary," and said he wanted clarification from Ambassador Zvi Aviner Vapni about the details and consequences of the decision. The Israeli ambassador is expected to appear at the Dutch Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.

It is not the first time Berendsen has summoned the Israeli envoy, according to NOS. The ambassador was also summoned in May over what the Netherlands described as degrading treatment of activists aboard a Gaza-bound flotilla intercepted by Israel.
