By Satid Sutipanya and Suttinee Yuvejwattana Thailand stepped up relief efforts as severe flooding spread disruption from Bangkok’s streets to airline schedules and auto production, widening the economic toll from days of torrential rain. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s cabinet is set to approve 2 billion baht ($59.5 million) in aid for flood victims Tuesday as authorities worked to drain inundated neighborhoods and deliver supplies to stranded residents.

The disruption is increasingly spilling into major industries.

Thai Airways International Pcl canceled 22 domestic and international flights scheduled for Sept. 29-30, including services to Singapore, India and Europe, after flooding left it short of staff and disrupted transportation to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport. The flag carrier also deployed additional workers to clear a baggage backlog. Bags from 52 flights operated Sept. 26-27 were still being delivered to passengers, while 34 flights were delayed on Sept. 28, the airline said. Chief Executive Officer Chai Eamsiri apologized to passengers.

Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul said Thai Airways’ handling of the disruption had hurt Thailand’s tourism image and called on the Finance Ministry, its largest shareholder, to convene an urgent board meeting.

Honda Motor Co. suspended motorcycle production at one of its Thai plants on Monday and Tuesday because of flooding, a company official said, confirming an earlier Nikkei Asia report. The plant is expected to resume operations Wednesday.

Authorities are closely watching Prachin Buri and Rayong, part of Thailand’s eastern industrial belt and a major center for auto manufacturing. Water levels in Prachin Buri may begin receding, while Rayong faces further heavy rain and water releases from spillways, government spokesman Ekkapob Pianpises said at an emergency briefing Tuesday.

The wider auto industry has so far avoided significant disruption, with most factories operating and parts shipments largely unaffected, according to the Federation of Thai Industries. The group maintained its 2026 production target of 1.45 million vehicles.

The floods have also disrupted 155 schools in Bangkok, some of which have been inundated for four or five days, Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong said. Some won’t reopen this week, examinations have been postponed and campuses are being used as evacuation centers.

The disruption follows a deluge that dumped more than 12 inches of rain on Bangkok over two to three days, nearly as much as the capital typically receives during the entire month of September. Drainage systems were overwhelmed, leaving roads and homes submerged. The mounting damage is also adding urgency to longer-term flood defenses.

The cabinet is also considering a 160 billion-baht ($4.8 billion), eight-year project to divert floodwater from northern Thailand away from heavily populated areas downstream, according to Danucha Pichayanan, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Council. Some funding has already been allocated, while additional borrowing may be used to speed construction, he said.
