KUALA LUMPUR -- AirAsia Group's financial headwinds caused by high jet fuel costs will not affect planned deliveries of new aircraft, CEO Bo Lingam told Nikkei Asia on Tuesday.

The budget carrier is preparing to expand its fleet with hundreds of Airbus jets on order. Meanwhile, it reported a net loss of 527 million ringgit ($129 million) in the April-June quarter, with the group's liabilities exceeding assets by about 600 million ringgit as of June 30. The company is currently seeking $1 billion funding to refinance and support working capital.

Speaking in an interview at the company's headquarters near Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Bo said financing had already been arranged for about 70 to 75 aircraft, and brushed off concerns about future deliveries. "I don't see an issue with financing planes," he said, adding that seven new aircraft will be delivered in 2027 with 20 more in 2028. Bo said AirAsia does not intend to arrange financing for its entire order book too far in advance.

Instead, it will seek funding closer to delivery, allowing the airline to negotiate more favorable rates as its financial position improves. Bo acknowledged that elevated fuel costs were putting pressure on its liquidity but said AirAsia continues to generate cash.

"If you ask me, do we have liquidity issues? Yes, of course," he said. "[But] even after paying lessors, I do have cash because this business is generating cash every day." He also ruled out possible government support to maintain operations, as speculation circulated and the company's share prices plunged this month. "It's business as usual. We are not closing down," he said.

AirAsia Group is confident it can refinance to ride out this year's fuel cost surge and add new Airbuses to its fleet as planned.

Regarding the $1 billion financing plan, Deputy Group CEO Farouk Kamal, who was also present at the interview, said that about $500 million to $550 million would be used to consolidate existing borrowings into a single instrument, with part of the remaining funds available for working capital.

Farouk said the refinancing would lower interest costs and include a "bullet" repayment structure, leaving the principal due at maturity rather than requiring repayments throughout the loan period. He said that it would ease near-term cash demands, although the debt would still have to be repaid when it falls due. The arrangement would also allow AirAsia to repay earlier if its financial position improves.

"The one that we're doing is in a loan format at the moment," as opposed to tapping international bond markets, he said. During the interview, the executives also addressed media reports about aircraft disposals.

Bloomberg reported this month that AirAsia had sold six newly delivered A321neos since the start of 2025, including two in July, describing the move as unusual amid the airline's financial pressures.

Bo said the six were leased aircraft that AirAsia had agreed to take during its COVID restructuring, but their leasing costs were too high to justify operating them. "The lease was expensive, so we went back and told them," he said. "If I were to put it in the market, I cannot get back the return on investment on this plane." Bo said AirAsia returned the aircraft to the lessor, which could obtain higher leases elsewhere. He described it as a one-off decision. "It's not our aircraft from Airbus that we gave away," he said.
