BANGKOK -- Thai Airways is temporarily reducing its flights by about 30% under plans announced Tuesday over disruptions from recent heavy rains and flooding.

Thai Airways CEO Chai Eamsiri apologized in a news conference that day, saying that "the impact of this flooding exceeded our expectations." The rainfall had left large swaths of the Bangkok metropolitan area submerged. At Suvarnabhumi Airport, Thailand's main air hub, a reduced number of workers unloading luggage significantly decreased processing capacity for luggage and cargo.

When aircraft did arrive, the luggage could not be unloaded in time, causing widespread disruptions to flight operations. Thai Airways said 97% of its flights were experiencing delays or other interruptions.

To cope, Thai Airways decided late Monday to eliminate more than 30 flights, representing about 30% of the total schedule. The flights were canceled or rebooked on other airlines. As of early Tuesday, only around half of the personnel normally needed for baggage handling were available.
