Sen. Jim Justice (R-W.Va.) said the Trump administration should reconsider its approach to immigration enforcement Tuesday, joining the chorus of criticism of a recent crackdown that has roiled rural communities ahead of the midterms. “Before you know it, you get people that get carried away in their job and whatever it may be, and all of a sudden, then you're dragging people away that have lived on your street corner for 15 years, and I don't know that we need to be doing that stuff,” Justice said in an interview Tuesday. “To get better, the first thing you got to do is admit you're doing something wrong,” he said.

The criticism comes after ranching groups complained that Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions in Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma are costing cattlemen millions of dollars and choking supply chains.

It also comes as the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown and its impacts are raising concern among GOP lawmakers who are already contending with high food prices and an economic crisis in farm country, which has vulnerable Republicans playing defense on the campaign trail. Ranching industry leaders say enforcement actions are causing widespread absenteeism among fearful workers, which is hurting their bottom lines. “It is a very difficult balancing act from the standpoint of our ranchers … all of a sudden, they're understaffed,” Justice said. Other Republicans emphasized that legal farm workers should be protected and their temporary visas expedited.
