TOKYO -- The government of Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is unified in its view that reflationary policy is over, Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said in an interview with Nikkei, backing the Bank of Japan's efforts to fight inflation as Tokyo seeks to counter yen weakness.

"The government will speak in one voice," Katayama said in an exclusive interview on Thursday, responding to yen selling sparked by a summary of opinions the BOJ released earlier in the day from the monetary policy meeting held two weeks ago. The central bank's meeting saw the key policy rate raised to 1.25%, the highest level in 31 years.

The summary of opinions showed that a participant from the Cabinet Office told the BOJ meeting, "The government expects the bank to fulfill its accountability regarding the decisions at this monetary policy meeting and to examine carefully the cumulative effects of past policy interest rate hikes" -- a remark widely interpreted by the market as a sign that the Takaichi government opposed further policy tightening, sparking knee-jerk yen selling that sent the currency from around 157 to the 158 range against the U.S. dollar.

"Prime Minister Takaichi believes that the independence of the Bank of Japan needs to be respected, as set out in Article 3 of the BOJ law," Katayama said, underlining that the government would make sure to send consistent signals to the market.

The Cabinet Office, responsible for economic projections and government policy coordination, is led by Minoru Kiuchi, a cabinet minister known for favoring stimulative policies.

Katayama's Ministry of Finance, by contrast, has been at the forefront of the battle against yen bears, spending over 27 trillion yen, or about $170 billion, on currency intervention to support the yen so far this year.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has repeatedly voiced concerns about the yen's persistent weakness and urged Tokyo to avoid reflationary messages that have kept the yen on the back foot.
