They're saying it in videos posted on TikTok in solidarity, in Instagram posts where they hope to protect her identity, and in comments on Threads where they share their own harrowing experiences: "I am Jane Doe."

The repeated refrain, part of a wave of online support this week for the complainant in the Cornell University gang-rape allegations, is being compared to the cultural and structural reckoning of the 2017 #MeToo movement that changed the culture of silence around sexual assault.

The Cornell case recently came under the spotlight after the complainant, known in court documents as Jane Doe, filed a civil lawsuit on Sept. 16 alleging the Ivy League university protected the seven men, now dubbed "the Cornell 7."

The #iamjanedoe movement seems to have been born out of an attempt to protect Jane Doe's identity after an independent journalist put out a public call Monday to name her "so we can all evaluate her veracity … since her lawsuit didn't hesitate to name and shame seven of her peers as gang-rapists."

He later claimed to have identified her, posting and then deleting her information, adding "the principle has been served." The global response across the internet was swift.

"He is trying to expose her identity. We won't let him. I am Jane Doe," a content creator posted in a video on TikTok viewed more than 5.2 million times by Friday.

"You are Jane Doe, I am Jane Doe, we are ALL Jane Doe until no one is Jane Doe," someone else commented.

"We all are Jane Doe, good luck finding her, men," another person commented on one user's Instagram video.

Jane Doe alleges the men named in her lawsuit plied her with ketamine and assaulted her over several hours at a frat house in October 2024. None of the fraternity members have been criminally charged. On Monday, after intense backlash, the Tompkins County district attorney announced he was reopening the investigation.

By Thursday evening, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she'd lost faith in the DA's ability to handle the case and was appointing New York attorney general Letitia James to oversee the investigation.

On Friday, Hochul says she intends to "close the loophole" in her state's law that currently makes it difficult for sexual assault survivors to claim they were mentally incapacitated during an assault if they were voluntarily intoxicated. 'It's happening all the time' Takara Small, a technology journalist in Toronto, told CBC News Network Friday that the global movement is meant to confuse the algorithm and search engines, but that it's impossible to fully scrub a digital footprint.

"I understand this action, but I think it's important people don't share any information that could be linked to her," Small said.

There are currently thousands of online "I am Jane Doe" posts across multiple platforms, reaching millions of people. And while one of the goals is to bury any identifying information of the actual Jane Doe, it is also a moment of reckoning.

Many of the posters have been describing their own sexual assault experiences, the difficulties in coming forward and, in some cases, naming the people they say harmed them.

What Cornell's alleged rape case and the Hockey Canada trial's striking parallels reveal What to know about Cornell's alleged frat house gang-rape case and the 'Cornell 7' "Four men at once. I was 22," someone posted on TikTok.

"I was 18," someone posted on "People need to realize this is happening to so many women, not just one brave woman at Cornell University. It’s happening all the time. Everywhere to SOOO MANY women," she added.

In Canada, about 44 per cent of the population over age 15 say they have been sexually assaulted in their lifetime, with women three times as likely to say so as men, according to a 2025 survey by Statistics Canada. Fewer than one in 10 reported it to the police.

According to the U.S. Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN), about one in four undergraduate women experience rape or sexual assault after enrolling in college. 'We are so damn tired'

U.S. journalist Katie Couric gathered some of the responses she'd seen online and posted them on Threads on Wednesday.

"The Cornell case has unleashed a torrent of first-person accounts from women revisiting traumatic experiences they had long kept buried," Couric wrote.

They included posts by one user who said they'd been assaulted by their professor, who was allowed to retire early and is now a dean at another school. Another said they'd been raped while asleep, still another said they had been drugged and raped for hours on a college campus while people watched and nobody was prosecuted.

"It feels like shouting into a void," someone commented. "It's infuriating." The feeling was echoed on Substack, where an author asked what's really changed since "The viral #MeToo movement in 2017 felt so significant because it was the largest collective reckoning of rape culture maybe ever, and happened mostly in an online space. It was the first time I said things out loud that I had kept to myself for most of my life," she wrote in a post Tuesday.

"The same is happening now with the Cornell 7, but we are almost 10 years on from #MeToo and we are so damn tired."
