The global bond market is having a moment, and not in a good way. For months, government yields have climbed and kept climbing. Investors are finally weary of shoddy fiscal planning, and demanding more compensation. The governments themselves are contending with a difficult mix of inflation risk, immense borrowing needs — say, to finance a war in Iran — and debt-funded corporate spending, mostly on AI. The usual suspects like the US and Japan are present. But in recent days, France has become the most uncomfortable example of what happens when investors stop assuming a big, rich country will always get the benefit of the doubt.

Before we dig into the reasons for France's unwanted moment in the sun, let's take a look at the financial fallout: The yield on 10-year French government bonds recently touched its highest since 2002, and is even loftier than a former crisis location like Greece. What's even more remarkable is the speed at which it reached that level. Fiscal concerns have been mounting elsewhere in Europe — in the UK, Italy, and Germany, just to name a few big ones — but France has managed to stand out. The situation has deteriorated so quickly, in fact, that the premium for French debt over German bonds is the widest since the euro zone debt crisis roughly a decade ago.

France has a lot of fiscal problems: a big debt load, a sizable annual budget deficit, weak-ish growth, and now much higher interest costs. They're manageable on an individual basis. But when they hit simultaneously, a country's debt can be quickly destabilized. They also don't have the safety net of the US or Japan. The US has its own currency, and it serves as the world's reserve. In Japan, much of the government debt is purchased by Japanese investors. France has nowhere near the same protection. And then you have the political bind the country finds itself in: Long story short, France doesn't have a clear-cut way out of its mess.

Not to mention a potentially destabilizing presidential election looms in 2027. To be clear, the US is not France. It has its own currency, the world's deepest government-bond market, and it can rely on seemingly unending demand for Treasurys. But the French episode is a reminder that markets can reprice a government's finances surprisingly fast once confidence starts to erode. The US has its own mix of huge deficits, rising interest expense, and political gridlock around tax hikes or spending cuts.

And while surging French yields won't directly boost US mortgage rates, they're part of a broader global rise in borrowing costs. The fixed-income market is connected, and pressure from France could spill outward. Plus a European flare-up could also rattle stocks, juice the dollar, and push investors into safe havens. France is hardly on the brink of default. But its bond-market scare is a useful reminder that fiscal credibility can disappear faster than it takes to build it. Hopefully Washington is paying attention.
