Gov. Ron DeSantis said the state was preparing for a worse-than-forecast scenario, while Sen. Rick Scott urged residents in evacuation zones to “get the hell out.”TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Gov. Ron DeSantis warned Floridians on Thursday to gear up for strong winds, flooding and power outages as Hurricane Isaias churns closer to the Sunshine State, the first storm for the state’s new emergency management chief.
DeSantis warned residents in the Florida Panhandle to prepare, and said the state has staged aircraft, rescue teams, fuel and other emergency supplies in the area ahead of the storm. Isaias, which formed in the Gulf of Mexico earlier this week and intensified into a Category 2 storm Thursday according to the National Hurricane Center, could strengthen further and is expected to make landfall near the Florida-Alabama border late Friday or early Saturday.
“People should take it seriously,” he said during a press conference at the state’s Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee. “Understand that you are going to have impacts. There’s no question.”The governor spoke alongside the newly appointed Division of Emergency Management Executive Director Jared Perdue, who also leads Florida’s Transportation Department. Kevin Guthrie, who led DEM for five years, left in August after he joined Lt. Gov. Jay Collins’ failed GOP primary bid for governor.
