The parliamentary seat left vacant by the resignation of Andy Burnham's predecessor, Keir Starmer, in a London constituency will remain in Labour's hands after the victory announced on Friday, October 9, of Labour's Sagal Abdi-Wali (45% of the vote). She triumphed over the Greens' leader Zack Polanski (33%). The result is a setback for the Greens and good news for the new prime minister.

The contest served as a test for both parties, which have been competing for months to attract and retain left-wing voters drawn to more pronounced social and environmental stances. The Greens' spectacular advances in the last local elections in May, as well as a surge in grassroots activists – now numbering 200,000 since Polanski took over as party leader a year ago – had raised hopes of winning a sixth seat in Parliament. The very fact that, in this Labour Party stronghold for more than 40 years, polls showed the candidates neck and neck during the short campaign that began on September 1 contributed to this. But the Greens paid the price for the change of prime minister in July and their own missteps.
