TOKYO/TAIPEI -- Taiwan is set to buy gas from a proposed project in the U.S. state of Alaska, marking a major step toward energy cooperation between the Asian tech power and its most important security partner.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday told a rally in the remote northwestern state that "Taiwan has just agreed to buy 30% of the gas coming off the pipeline for the next 20 years," without giving details. "That guarantees a success." In a press statement, Taiwan's economy ministry confirmed plans to participate in the project, with an envisioned investment of up to $4.4 billion. The ministry said the current blueprint calls for buying 6 million metric tons of gas per year once the project comes online, possibly by 2032.
Taipei said that specifics, including equity stakes and other terms, are still to be determined. It noted the geographic advantage of being able to ship gas directly to Taiwan via Pacific routes, which would help spread risks.
In 2025, Taiwan's government-run oil major CPC signed a letter of intent with the Alaska Gasline Development Corp. for the development and purchase of liquefied natural gas.
South Korea is another key potential Asian player in the endeavor, although Seoul and Washington have differed lately in how they describe the status of investment commitments.
Energy security is a key issue for Taiwan, which relies heavily on oil and gas from the Middle East to power its tech-driven economy. Disruptions stemming from the Iran war this year have highlighted its vulnerability as has intensifying Chinese maritime pressure that many experts fear could one day turn into an attempt to impose a blockade. China claims Taiwan as its territory -- a position the elected government in Taipei rejects.
The Trump administration's overall commitment to Taiwan, meanwhile, has been under intense scrutiny as a reported $14 billion sale of U.S. arms remains in limbo amid Chinese warnings about such deals.
Taiwan's economy ministry said that the long-term Alaska project will promote diversity of supplies, "further strengthen our country's energy resilience, and deepen cooperation between Taiwan and the United States."
Shipping gas from Alaska to Taiwan would avoid key choke points like the Strait of Hormuz near Iran and the Malacca Strait in Southeast Asia, but not without significant development costs. In a memo to clients earlier this year, strategic consultancy BowerGroupAsia observed that CPC was "cautious on the investment leg given the scale of capital requirements and uncertainty around commercial terms."
