Australian party One Nation has launched its campaign for the Victorian state election, pledging to boost police numbers and increase penalties for young offenders. It says it would fund the measures partly by scrapping the Suburban Rail Loop project and Victoria's Treaty process.
The law-and-order platform positions One Nation against the state's major parties ahead of the campaign. Victoria's Suburban Rail Loop is a large, long-running infrastructure project, and the Treaty process is a separate state initiative on Indigenous recognition and self-determination.
It remains unclear how much funding scrapping either initiative would actually free up, or whether One Nation would hold enough seats to advance the proposals. Other parties have not yet formally responded to the campaign launch.
