TOKYO -- Japanese stocks jumped on Monday, with the benchmark Nikkei Stock Average crossing the 70,000 threshold during intraday trading for the first time in three months.

Tech stocks led the way, with artificial intelligence beneficiaries SoftBank Group, Advantest and Tokyo Electron helping push the blue-chip gauge higher by more than 1,700 points, or 2.6%, at one point. The index closed up 2.4% at 69,946.86. The broader Tokyo Stock Price Index (Topix) gained more than 1%.

Monday's surge followed strong gains in the U.S. on Friday, where all three major stock indexes ended higher. The September U.S. jobs report showed slower-than-expected growth, prompting investors to pare back bets on a Federal Reserve interest rate hike this month. Treasury yields eased, providing support for growth-oriented stocks, including AI-related shares.

In the past five trading days, the Nikkei average has risen 6%. AI stocks have led the way higher, especially after a positive earnings outlook announced by U.S. chipmaker Micron Technology last week.

Among the Nikkei average's 225 constituents, chipmaker Renesas Electronics and electronics parts manufacturer TDK logged the biggest gains, both ending the day around 8% higher. Taiyo Yuden -- which, together with TDK, last week announced a partnership to develop advanced components for AI applications -- advanced 4%.

Japanese shares hit a milestone in mid-June, when the Nikkei average closed above 70,000 for the first time, with its gains for the year reaching more than 40% at that point. Their rapid rise was fueled by the AI rally, as well as growing hopes for a U.S.-Iran peace deal. The blue-chip index went on to record an all-time closing high of 72,366.34 on June 25.

However, the index later entered a period of volatility and lost momentum as the AI rally cooled and the conflict in the Middle East continued.

The Nikkei average is more than 2,400 points off its record closing high, while the Topix is about 50 points shy of its all-time closing high of 4,197.20, reached in mid-August.

The recent rally is happening against the backdrop of elevated long-term interest rates around the world. In Japan, the benchmark 10-year government bond yield has risen past 3% for the first time in three decades.

But unlike in other developed markets Japan's rising rates have been driven by "investors' positive assessment of growth prospects," according to Mabrouk Chetouane, head of global market strategy at Natixis Investment Managers.

Expectations for "improvement in the overall economic environment," driven in part by the "large-scale stimulus plan" spearheaded by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, are behind the rise in yields, he said. "This fiscal stimulus not only supports demand through tax cuts but also works to bolster the supply side through a series of public-private partnerships focused on several sectors deemed strategic," such as AI, energy and security.

Markets are closely watching the pace of rate hikes by central banks in the U.S. and Japan. In September, both the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan raised rates to combat upside inflation risks. The Fed will hold its next monetary policy meeting on Oct. 27 and 28, followed by the BOJ's meeting on Oct. 29 to 30.

According to the CME FedWatch Tool, Fed funds futures imply a roughly 18% chance of a Fed rate hike this month, while data from Totan Research and Totan ICAP put the probability of a BOJ hike at 13%.

Yusuke Maeyama, senior researcher at NLI Research Institute, said that with Japanese stocks offering little in the way of attractive valuations, "The market is likely to remain sensitive to monetary policy in both countries and resulting moves in interest rates." He added: "The Nikkei average is expected to remain heavily influenced by trends in AI- and semiconductor-related stocks." Oil prices will also be on investors' radar as the U.S. and Iran continue to alternate between threats and moves toward a ceasefire.

On Monday, Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures were trading lower after the Group of Seven nations agreed late last week to release diesel and crude inventories to help ease rising fuel prices.

Still, Maeyama sees corporate earnings providing support for Japanese equities. "As long as the earnings environment does not deteriorate sharply, continued profit growth should provide support for share prices," he said. "If strong earnings and upward revisions to corporate forecasts continue as earnings season gets underway in mid-October, stocks could establish a higher floor and potentially rise further." Elsewhere in Asia, Taiwan's Taiex soared over 2% to mark a fresh record high. South Korea's market was closed due to a national holiday.
