Government Pension Investment Fund did not discuss its portfolio allocation at a board meeting held in September, according to sources familiar with the matter. The news may damp recent speculation about a portfolio review.

Investors have been on edge over whether the $2 trillion fund may increase its allocation target for domestic bonds after a portfolio review appeared on the agenda of a board meeting held at a highly unusual time during the August summer break. GPIF declined to comment on the matter.

The summer meeting was held after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called on the GPIF and the country’s other pension funds to increase domestic investments, even though the board had concluded in March that a review of its holdings wasn’t needed.

“There is no indication that the latest management committee meeting made any new decision to move forward with a review of the basic portfolio,” said Koji Okuda, executive researcher at the Daiichi Life Research Institute Co., although he added that it cannot be completely ruled out that the discussions are continuing at a more technical level.

Investors are speculating Takaichi is seeking to tap the fund to support the flagging yen and Japanese government bonds.

The yen hit a 40-year low in July and the Bank of Japan’s nominal effective exchange rate index — which measures the yen against a trade-weighted basket of currencies has extended its slide to fresh record lows this year, reflecting the currency’s broad-based weakness against the euro, sterling and several Asian peers.

Japan’s benchmark 10-year bond yield rose to its highest level since 1996 in September on worries about inflation, Takaichi’s call for aggressive spending and a global bond market rout.

The GPIF currently allocates 25% of its funds to Japanese bonds, foreign bonds, domestic stocks and overseas equities respectively, a mix adopted in April 2020. Before that, the fund put 35% of its funds in domestic bonds and 15% in foreign bonds.
