Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda gave few indications that he intends to challenge prevailing bets against a back-to-back interest rate increase this month, reiterating the bank’s standing policy views.
“We intend to continue raising the policy interest rate and adjusting the degree of monetary accommodation in response to developments in economic activity, prices, and financial conditions,” Ueda said in a brief speech Tuesday in Tokyo.
“We will consider the timing and pace of these adjustments while assessing the risks and the likelihood of our baseline outlook for the economy and prices materializing,” Ueda said.
The speech comes as economists generally expect the bank to hold policy settings steady at the Oct. 30 conclusion of the next board meeting. By reiterating the BOJ’s policy posture and economic view, the governor indicated he sees little need to reverse such perceptions, while keeping the door open for a hike beyond October.
Pricing in overnight index swaps implies that investors see around a 12% probability of a rate hike this month. The odds surge to around 90% when the December meeting is included.
