More than 20,000 migrant movements from Ethiopia into Djibouti have been recorded since Sept. 10, while thousands of migrants have been stranded along dangerous routes in the country, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Tuesday.

Alexandre Coissac, the IOM chief of mission in Djibouti, told reporters in Geneva that migrants continue to travel along the Eastern Route, which connects the Horn of Africa with Yemen and the Gulf, and is one of the "busiest and most dangerous" migration corridors.

Migrants are also returning from Yemen toward their home countries through Djibouti, with the IOM recording 539 Ethiopian returnees since Sept. 10.

Between Sept. 20 and 30, more than 3,000 stranded migrants were observed along migration routes in Djibouti, facing dehydration, exhaustion and shortages of food and water.

The IOM warned that migrants are increasingly using secondary routes, making it more difficult to reach those requiring assistance.

The agency said it is providing stranded migrants with immediate assistance, including food and water, and helping those who request voluntary return.

Djibouti is simultaneously receiving people fleeing Yemen, as well as migrants traveling toward and returning from the country, the IOM said, warning that the scale and complexity of the movements are stretching existing resources and services. The agency called for increased international support, and said that migrants need safety, protection and assistance.

According to the latest IOM data, more than 184,000 people have been displaced in Yemen since Aug. 1 as fighting between the Saudi-backed government forces and the Houthi rebels intensifies.
