Students protest against educational reforms introduced by Valérie Glatigny, vice-president and minister of education for the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, the French Community of Belgium, in Brussels on October 6, 2026.

In the heart of Brussels, in front of Athénée Charles Janssens, the mild, calm atmosphere of Indian summer seemed undisturbed by students who, on Tuesday, October 6, had been blocking the entrance to this secondary school for two days. Three 12th-grade students monitored the comings and goings, just below a large banner reading, "Still angry."

And here, the word "still" matters, because even if their action echoed the protests by high school students in France, these three students wanted to emphasize that the roots of this spontaneous movement ran deep in French-speaking Belgium. "We're well aware of what's happening in France right now," said Soufiane (students quoted in this article have asked to remain anonymous). "But our demands are really specific to Belgium." A significant part of the education community opposes reforms approved on June 5 by the Parliament of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, the body that manages education for French-speaking Belgians. This legislative decree sets out a cost-cutting plan of €500 million by 2029, compared to the €10.65 billion that the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles allocated to education in 2025.
