The European Commission president said "the EU remains ready to help turn today’s fragile ceasefire into a durable peace" on the third anniversary of the Hamas attack.

Top European Union officials have marked the third anniversary of the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on Israel, calling for lasting peace in the region.

“We honour the victims and stand with the families who still carry the heavy weight of grief. We remember the young lives cut short at a music festival. And the long ordeal of the hostages. The EU stands with all those whose lives were forever changed by that day,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X Wednesday.

Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing more than 1,200 people in Israel, many of whom were EU citizens, and taking 251 hostages. The Israeli military’s subsequent offensive in Gaza killed at least 74,228 Palestinians, displaced 90% of Gaza’s population and destroyed or damaged 92% of homes in the area.
