Tata Group chairman N Chandrasekaran on Wednesday said innovation will be critical to the conglomerate's growth as it expands into emerging areas such as semiconductors, batteries, renewable energy and quantum computing. Speaking at Tata InnoVista 2026, Chandrasekaran said the group has historically been a pioneer in areas that were ahead of their time, citing initiatives such as Tata Steel, hydroelectric power, the Indian Institute of Science, aviation and information technology."
Group has always been pioneering and pushing the envelope," Chandrasekaran said, adding that Tata Group is now at a similar inflection point as it enters new technology-intensive sectors. The group is investing in semiconductors, batteries, renewable energy and energy storage, while Tata Consultancy Services is also working on next-generation technologies, he said. Chandrasekaran said innovation would be important not just for developing new products, but also for improving productivity, quality and competitive advantage."
It's not about only the final product, but it's also about competitive advantage and doing things differently," he said. He cited Tata Electronics' semiconductor investments as an example of how large-scale investments can push companies to innovate at the higher end of the technology spectrum. Chandrasekaran also identified quantum computing as an area the group should begin investing in, even though the timeline for its widespread adoption remains uncertain." Quantum computing will be a next big thing.
We don't know when it will happen," he said, noting that such technologies could become mainstream in five, eight or 10 years — or sooner. The Tata Group chairman also stressed the need to make new investments and products more sustainable, with circularity becoming increasingly important across the group's businesses. He pointed to Tata Steel's efforts to produce steel from recycled material and said Tata Motors' commercial vehicle and passenger car businesses were looking at recycling as a separate business opportunity.
Across the group, companies are increasingly examining manufacturing waste and other discarded material as potential raw material for other products, he said." As we introduce new projects, circularity is going to be hugely important," Chandrasekaran said.
