The first debate for Georgia Senate on Thursday evening quickly devolved into a string of personal attacks and campaign talking points as Sen. Jon Ossoff (D) and Rep. Mike Collins (R) wrestle for voters’ support in the closely-watched midterm race. The incumbent Democrat has maintained a slight lead over his GOP challenger in recent polling, but Republicans are still holding out hope to flip this seat in November.
The candidates faced questions during the Atlanta News First debate in Atlanta about their stance on a range of issues, including artificial intelligence, border security, rural health care and agriculture. Repeatedly, Collins and Ossoff used their allotted time to criticize each other's family backgrounds and argue that their opponent was not fit to represent Georgia on Capitol Hill. Here are four takeaways from their first face off: The Democratic incumbent referred to Collins several times on Thursday evening as “the bigot congressman,” an insult he has repeatedly invoked on the campaign trail.
Ossoff pointed to the lawmaker’s past controversial social media posts, including a sharing a video from the University of Mississippi in 2024 in which a Black woman is surrounded by white students who are mimicking ape-like motions and making monkey sounds. Collins captioned the post, “Ole Miss taking care of business.”“If John Lewis were marching today from Selma to Montgomery, Mike Collins would be grabbing a billy club,” Ossoff said in reference to the post.
The senator also accused the Republican of promoting “Neo-Nazi propaganda,” pointing to social media posts made by his son-in-law and a former staffer. “It’s not just that you hired half the Third Reich to staff your congressional office and you have promoted Neo-Nazi content online. It’s that you’re robbing your constituents to subsidize your donors,” Ossoff said during his response to a question about data centers.
Collins responded to a moderator question about his son-in-law’s posts, saying he “condemned racism, anti-Semitism, hate.”“I don’t care where the source is, and I tell him that too. It’s wrong,” he said. The Republican nominee called his opponent a “trust fund kid," arguing he's unable to understand the affordability issues faced by people in the state.
Collins reupped this criticism in response to a debate question about financial troubles facing rural hospitals in the state. “You know the problem is, and Jon Ossoff won’t understand this because he doesn’t have to worry about health care,” he said. “He doesn’t have to worry about trying to buy health care insurance for his family. He never will.”Ossoff hit back, claiming his opponent “inherited a seat in Congress” during his closing statement.
The Republican's father is Mac Collins, the late Georgia lawmaker who served 12 years in the House. Collins and Ossoff hit one another over their legislative record on affordability, as rising costs of living across the country remain top of mind for voters ahead of Election Day. The Democrat pointed to rising diesel and fertilizer costs amid the Iran war and the Trump administration’s tariffs.
“As we speak right now, it’s Georgia farmers bearing the brunt of the Mike Collins-Donald Trump tariffs,” Ossoff said.
“Just like it’s Georgia farmers bearing the brunt of these high diesel prices. The Republican nominee placed blame on last year’s government shutdown, which he and other congressional lawmakers have accused Democrats of causing. “He shut it down, y’all,” Collins said. “Right when we were trying to get that emergency money out for Hurricane Helene so that our farmers and our small communities could repair and prepare for this year’s harvest.” Ossoff put his opponent on the spot during Thursday’s debate about his support for President Trump’s unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, including in Georgia’s Fulton County. “Mike Collins is one of the most extreme members of Congress,” the Democrat said. “He’s a Trump puppet election denier. I want to hear if Mike still believes the 2020 election was stolen. What do you say, Mike?” Ossoff turned to face his opponent, who stared down at his notes before a moderator asked him a new question about The Laken Riley Act he introduced.
