Nigeria's government is negotiating a ceiling of 1,350 naira per litre on petrol as global crude prices climb. State-run NNPC plans to sell fuel at landing cost to cushion consumers from the shock. Opposition figures have questioned whether the move offers lasting relief.

Nigeria's government is negotiating a ceiling of 1,350 naira per litre on the landing cost of petrol, a senior official said, as global crude and refined fuel prices climb amid wider market volatility. The proposed cap would apply at the ex-gantry stage, before fuel reaches retail stations across the country.

State-owned NNPC Retail has separately said its filling stations will sell petrol at landing cost to shield drivers from the worst of the price swings, a decision the presidency framed as a cushion rather than a permanent fix. Nigeria deregulated fuel pricing in 2023, and pump prices have since tracked international oil markets closely, repeatedly straining household budgets.

Former vice-president Atiku Abubakar criticised a separate 30-day fuel discount announced by President Bola Tinubu, arguing it offers no lasting relief to Nigerians. Analysts expect further government intervention if crude prices stay elevated, with the proposed ceiling still subject to final sign-off.
