Anthropic has updated its usage policies to prohibit "sustained and needless" abusive behaviour toward its Claude chatbot, the company said. The San Francisco-based AI firm said the rule sets a baseline for respectful interaction, not a claim that its systems have feelings. The policy adds to a broader industry debate over how AI companies should treat increasingly capable chatbots.

Anthropic has told users of its Claude chatbot that they can no longer engage in "sustained and needless" abusive behaviour toward the system, according to an update to the company's usage policies reported Saturday. The San Francisco-based AI firm said the change sets a baseline for interactions rather than asserting that its models experience distress.

The policy arrives as Anthropic and rival AI developers face growing questions about how their systems should be treated as they become more capable and more widely used in daily life. Anthropic has previously researched what it calls "model welfare," exploring whether its AI systems warrant any form of ethical consideration.

Executives at AI companies have increasingly weighed in on how users interact with chatbots, citing both ethical questions and practical concerns, such as abusive prompts producing lower-quality or unpredictable responses. Anthropic did not specify how violations of the new rule would be enforced.
