German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday criticized the US administration’s diesel exports deal with Russia and ruled out Europe’s support for any arrangement that would ease pressure on Moscow.

Speaking at a news conference in Berlin, Merz said Germany and Europe would not accept the step, and would continue to stand by Ukraine’s side.

“We take note of the agreement between the United States and Russia on the export of diesel,” he said. “For Germany and for Europe, such a decision is out of the question. Russia will only negotiate seriously under pressure, and that is why we are sticking to our Russia sanctions.”Merz condemned Russia’s latest military attacks and argued that after Moscow’s targeting of civilian energy infrastructure in Ukraine, Western countries should introduce even harsher sanctions.

He said Russia is not responding positively to the latest proposals and will only come to the negotiating table if it feels real pressure.

“You can see this in the proposal for an energy ceasefire made by President Trump over the weekend,” Merz said. “Russia has since responded to that proposal — specifically, with massive attacks on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure.”He said Europeans were in contact with the Trump administration on the latest developments and on the “right strategy” toward Russia.

The chancellor reiterated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy can count on Germany and on Europe, adding that European leaders will discuss the latest developments during their summit in Brussels later this week.
