The leader of an Australian Islamic center said he has no links to the FlyDubai co-pilot who attempted to hijack a plane, following allegations from the United Arab Emirates that there was an association with the center.
The UAE’s Attorney-General said last week that the 29-year-old Omani co-pilot, whom it didn’t name but was previously identified as Hamam al-Hammami, started drifting toward extremism and terrorism while studying in Melbourne in 2017, according to state-run news agency WAM.
Through his regular attendance at a mosque, he became acquainted with people connected with MyCentre, which he said was managed by a man known as Abu Hamza, it said.
In a statement on MyCentre’s Facebook page, Abu Hamza said he had never met al-Hammami and there was no record that he ever attended the center, aed charity also known as Multicultural Youth Centre.
“I strongly reject any attempt to associate me or Multicultural Youth Centre with al-Hammami,” he said in the statement.
“Such claims are unfounded, misleading and risk unfairly damaging the reputation of an organization that has served the wider Australian community for decades.”Investigators are trying to piece together al-Hammami’s history after he attacked the captain of FlyDubai Flight FZ1073, which was traveling from Dubai on Sept. 30, with the intent of crashing the plane into Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv.
Australia is investigating the co-pilot’s time in the country, where he was enrolled at RMIT University in Melbourne between 2015 and 2017, but failed to complete an engineering qualification.
He later undertook flight training in New Zealand, which is carrying out its own investigation.
Before joining FlyDubai in January 2026, al-Hammami worked at Royal Air Maroc from early 2025. Before then, he was employed by Oman Air from 2020 to 2024, according to the WAM report.
