Demand for compute and energy infrastructure will continue to outstrip supply through the end of the decade and beyond, creating opportunities for investors to finance the AI buildout, according to Brookfield Asset Management CEO Connor Teskey.
The imbalance is strong enough to withstand short-term pauses in development, allowing providers of computing and energy capacity to continue building aggressively, Teskey said in an interview with Bloomberg Television on Tuesday. The New York-headquartered firm, which raised a record $77 billion in the second quarter, sees AI and digital infrastructure — along with the energy needed to support it, as the fastest-growing area.
“Demand was so far ahead of supply, and it’s going to stay very far ahead of supply throughout the end of this decade and beyond,” Teskey said. “Despite some of the headlines, we do not see things slowing down whatsoever.”The scale of the buildout is also creating opportunities for private capital as large companies seek greater control over their infrastructure, supply chains and key inputs, he added. That’s opening the door for investment firms to partner with companies to fund projects.
Since the start of the year, Brookfield has formed a strategic partnership with OpenAI and expanded its partnership with US fuel-cell maker Bloom Energy fivefold to $25 billion. The firm is also part of an Nvidia consortium that’s committing to financing AI computing deals totaling more than $500 billion.
Rising power consumption is driving investment across electricity generation, with Brookfield seeing growth in renewables, fuel cells, batteries and nuclear power. Demand is also extending to more traditional infrastructure, including utility grids, gas pipelines and transportation assets.
While higher interest rates could make it more difficult for some investors and operators to deploy, Teskey said that Brookfield’s access to capital puts the firm in a fortunate position to capitalize on current opportunities.
“There’s a lot of growth in the market and that can overwhelm slightly higher cost of capital,” he said.
