Fort Hood massacre survivor Sgt. Alonzo Lunsford shared his complicated feelings on the planned execution of convicted shooter Nidal Hasan potentially being livestreamed in December.
Appearing on The Hill’s partner network NewsNation’s “Katie Pavlich Tonight,” Lunsford stated he was “excited about the firing squad” planned for Hasan’s execution.
“In terms of it being livestreamed, I mean, for mature adults, if you want to watch it, watch it,” he said. “If you don’t, don’t. But I have an issue with kids viewing this. Kids and adolescents, this is not for their young minds.”“The young minds are not in a position to process seeing a horrific act or the back end of being a murderer the way that Hasan was and what he did for him to pay for his crime. It’s not for everybody’s eyes. It’s not a thing where we’re going to have a tailgate,” Lunsford continued.
“That’s not what we stand for. So, I mean, that’s just my gut feeling on this whole situation,” he concluded.
Lunsford survived the shooting at Fort Hood where 13 members of the U.S. Army were killed and 32 were injured, most of whom were military personnel in what was the deadliest mass shooting ever on a U.S. military installation. Hasan has remained on the U.S. military’s death row since he was sentenced to death in 2013.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced last week that Hasan’s execution would be streamed and open to the public for viewing and also be held at Fort Hood, which drew almost immediate criticism from both sides of the aisle.
Hegseth has said he wanted the “harshest lawful punishment” for Hasan; however, President Trump said on Saturday, he will “make a decision ultimately” about whether the execution will be shown live.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) criticized the possibility of the execution being livestreamed, saying she expected such a decision from “terrorists and dictators, but not here in America.”
Archbishop Timothy Broglio, head of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, also disapproved of the livestreamed execution, warning that it could “imitate the terrorists.”“The crime committed by Nidal Malik Hasan was heinous, but does exposing the public to his execution serve any purpose,” Broglio asked in a Monday statement.
