A series of developments involving India and the wider region unfolded on Tuesday, covering border tensions with China, the outlook for the Indian economy, security concerns in Saudi Arabia and India’s stand at the United Nations on terrorism.

There were also updates on the Quad’s cyber cooperation, the funeral of an Indian killed in the Riyadh airport attack, an alleged plot involving a flydubai flight in which an Indian captain was injured, and political and security developments in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

China strongly opposed India’s move to assign standardised names to 28 strategic locations and geographical features in Ladakh, claiming that the areas belonged to it.

In Washington, the International Monetary Fund raised India’s growth forecast for 2026-27 to 7 per cent from 6.4 per cent in July, citing resilient domestic demand and robust services activity. It said this placed India among the fastest-growing major economies.

India also advised its nationals in Saudi Arabia to remain "calm and vigilant" in view of an evolving security situation in the country. In a related development, India’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia attended the funeral of the Indian national killed in the attack on Riyadh airport and offered condolences to his family, officials said.

At the United Nations, India said crimes and atrocities committed by terrorists should be reflected within the framework of crimes against humanity, given the "grave nature" of terror acts and their impact on people.

In Singapore, senior cyber officials from Quad countries India, Japan, Australia and the US met and stressed the need to enhance regional resilience and capacity under the "Free and Open Indo-Pacific" and strengthen cyber capabilities.

In the UAE, two Maldivian pilots employed by flydubai were arrested in connection with an alleged attempt by an Omani co-pilot to hijack and crash a Dubai-Tel Aviv flight, according to media reports. Indian Captain Smit Machchhar was injured while foiling the suspected plot.

Pakistan’s army said it had successfully test-fired the hypersonic ballistic missile Fatah-2 Extended Range, which it said was capable of engaging long-range targets with high precision.

In another development in Pakistan, a passenger train bound for Peshawar derailed in Punjab province, killing at least six people and injuring 40 others, police said.

Pakistan’s federal government said people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had welcomed the imposition of governor’s rule, saying it had given them hope of improved security amid rising terrorist attacks. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also formed a committee to oversee governance and security in the province after emergency rule was imposed there, according to a media report.

Reacting to the move, the son of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan called the imposition of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa a "cowardly act". Khan’s party also accused the army of going after the rare earth deposits in the region.

In Sri Lanka, the magistrate’s court remanded the wife and elder son of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa in further custody in their respective cases.

In Bangladesh, an adviser to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman warned of "legal action" after former interim government chief Muhammad Yunus was heckled by purported supporters of the disbanded Awami League at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport.
