Page Plc

Page Plc said a recovery is emerging in some of Europe’s battered recruitment markets, with the staffing firm’s top boss pointing to improving sentiment as the first sign of a turn.

A recovery typically begins with improving sentiment, followed by better conversion of job offers into revenue and, finally, an increase in hiring activity Chief Executive Officer Nicholas Kirk said in an interview. “That’s what we’ve seen with the countries that have moved back into growth.”Third-quarter gross profit rose 1.5% at constant currencies to £190.5 million ($252.1 million), the first increase since 2022 and driven by strong performances in the Americas and Asia Pacific, according to a Tuesday statement.

Sentiment is also improving in several European countries including Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as the UK, according to Kirk.

“The UK is firmly in that sentiment stage where things feel better,” he said. “We haven’t seen that feed through into activity as yet. But I don’t think we’ll be that far away. I would like to think that over the next six months, we’ll start to see some growth in the UK.”Britain’s jobs market is facing its longest downturn since the early 2000s, according to the S&P Global’s UK purchasing managers’ index, which found earlier this month that employers cut back on staff for a 24th consecutive month.

“You add into that the protection they have as an employee in a country like France, and to put that at risk with the uncertainty in the backdrop is just something that not a lot of candidates will be willing to do,” he said.

On the challenges AI poses to the labor market, Kirk said senior roles will remain harder to displace. “Ultimately somebody has to sit at the top of an organization with all of this data that’s created and churned by AI, and make a decision,” he said. “And those are the types of people we hire.”The company expects 2026 operating profit to be approximately £29 million, up slightly from its prior forecast.
