Mexico’s secretary of national defense highlighted the growing use of drone technology by drug cartels, describing it as a matter of national concern.
Ricardo Trevilla Trejo’s comments Tuesday follow reports that Mexican cartel members are fighting as mercenaries in Ukraine to train in drone warfare tactics.
“Yes, they concern us across the country. That is why since last year, we have purchased many fixed and mobile anti-drone systems. We also have them along the entire border and we conduct operations in coordination with the United States,” Trejo said.
On Oct. 4 and 11, the Mexican military reported seizing 15 fiber optic drones in Sinaloa in northwestern Mexico -- a technology commonly used in the Russia-Ukraine war.
Sinaloa is at the center of Mexico’s latest cartel war, which erupted after the Sinaloa Cartel splintered into two rival factions vying for territorial control.
Trejo said authorities have not identified the criminal groups using the technology, noting that its use extends beyond Mexico’s northern region.
In August, residents of the small community of Los Bayados in the state of Guerrero were displaced from their homes by drone attacks carried out by criminal groups.
“We believe that … they make extensive use of commercial drones, which they later modify to attack rival groups and in many cases authorities as well. However, these are not highly sophisticated drones,” Trejo added.
