Canada’s relationship with India has “most definitely” improved after years of strain, Foreign Minister Anita Anand said, as the two countries seek to expand cooperation beyond security into trade, energy and technology.
Speaking to Bloomberg TV in New Delhi on Wednesday, Anand said the two sides are working toward a comprehensive economic partnership agreement by the end of the year. She also reiterated that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Canada in December.
“This is a complex relationship with many layers,” Anand said, citing trade, investment, critical minerals and energy. She pointed to Cameco’s C$2.6 billion ($1.8 billion) uranium supply deal with India announced in March as “the type of work we’re doing at various levels to ensure an integrated and growing relationship.”Anand said Canada’s immigration pullback, which has hit Indian students and migrants particularly hard, should not be read as a retreat from the relationship. The cuts were a “recalibration” aimed at ensuring housing and social services can support newcomers, she said, while immigration remains fundamental to Canada’s economic growth.
