Most Americans probably think New York City gets more media attention than it deserves, but the fate of socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani will have national implications. And his fate is tied in part to that of the police commissioner he inherited and retained, Jessica Tisch.

Yet Mr. Mamdani is now under pressure from his own left-wing supporters who elevated him to City Hall to sack Ms. Tisch. The Democratic Socialists of America, to which Mr. Mamdani belongs, is demanding that he “fire” her for not helping “drive ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] out of New York City.” [audio] Could Texas Turn Blue, and South Carolina, Too?

The DSA pressure began after ICE agents shot Oscar Belgal, a 28-year-old illegal immigrant. Mr. Belgal and his five-year-old son were in a car in the Marble Hill area of the city on Oct. 8 when they were approached by ICE agents as part of a targeted immigration enforcement.

When Mr. Belgal began to move the car, ICE agents fired seven rounds, hitting him in the neck (Mr. Belgal survived). An ICE spokesman says he “weaponized his vehicle” by ramming police cars, was threatening ICE agents, and has gang ties. Mr. Belgal had two prior arrests in the city, including one for robbery, according to the New York Police Department.

An investigation is underway, but the DSA is using what happened to villainize Ms. Tisch and the NYPD, who had no part of the incident. The DSA wants the mayor to “abolish the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group (SRG) and Community Response Team (CRT),” which they accuse of overzealous policing.

Go figure. Ms. Tisch is Mr. Mamdani’s best appointment, and the main reason the city hasn’t seen more people leave. Her focus on “quality of life” policing and other modern methods are a major reason the city has less disorder and falling crime rates.

The NYPD says major crime in the city has declined 6.6% in 2026 with even sharper drops in serious crime. The city recorded historic lows in shootings and murders in the first nine months of 2026. Shooting incidents fell 11.6% to 489 from 553. There were 14.4% fewer shooting victims (594 from 694) and 19.8% fewer murders (203 from 253).

It’s tempting to enjoy Mr. Mamdani’s political dilemma here as he deals with a revolt on his left. But he’s not going to find a better commissioner to run the NYPD. The mayor and the city need her more than she needs the job.
